knee deep in cow hides

i was given a fun task today while interning... my new favorite designer sent me to a supplier in downtown los angeles to search for leather hides for a few different items that need to be upholstered for clients. i spent hours searching for the perfect colors for each project while kicking myself for dressing in a skirt this morning that was a smidge on the short side... it was a little tricky to gracefully bend over the floor and look closely at all of the hides without putting on a show for the boys working in the warehouse... oh well... i am happy to say that i was able to do so without any major wardrobe malfunctions...  and i also learned that i personally prefer the feel of lamb to cow but the bummer is lambs are teeny tiny so you don't get as big of a hide... tricky when you are upholstering a king sized bed...

you may have heard about a little event coming to la this weekend dubbed by the media as "carmageddon." well, apparently the world as we know it will be interrupted this weekend because of a few miles on a stretch of  a major freeway being closed from friday night until monday morning... nobody knows what to expect and if it will actually cause neighborhood streets to be super congested and therefore making impossible to travel more than a couple of miles....

sooo, i decided that this is going to be the perfect weekend for a great diy project in my apartment and i have enlisted a friend to help me with it! you see, there is this fabulous wallpaper that i discovered that is perfect for my bedroom walls however, it costs close to $200 per roll and i would need two rolls of it just to cover one wall in my bedroom! (and no, it is not that my bedroom is large, it is that these rolls don't go very far at all!).. and since i don't own the walls i want to paper and don't really have the income to justify buying it anyway (this whole working for free thing rearing its ugly head again...), i decided why not try to paint the design onto my wall?  so my friend and i have spent the last week figuring out what the best way will be to do it (taping the entire design out versus creating a stencil)... who knows how it will turn out but i know we'll have fun trying to make it work! i already have the perfect ipod playlist created as our motivating background music....

below is an image of the "hicks hexagon" design that is my wallpaper inspiration... fingers crossed i will have an amazing "after" photo of my wall to share with you on monday!  oh yeah, and my crazy old landlady would not be so pleased if she knew my big plan... so, we'll just keep it between us...

until next time!

the almost 40 year old intern
