the roundabout way to age

a fellow intern and i were chatting a couple of days ago about what we did for the 4th of july. i mentioned that i saw hall & oates at the hollywood bowl and my intern friend asked "what decade were they popular?" i responded "the eighties!  one of the greatest decades for music ever." and then she asks "so, what year were you born?" i looked her in the eye with a smile on my face and said  "i was born in 1971 and i am 39 years young." i think she was a little surprised that i was so frank in my response and did not make her use any math skills to get the answer to the question she really wanted to ask...  i know she's probably been dying to know my actual age since she met me six months ago because i am clearly not 22 (as most of the other interns are) and i am surprised that it has taken her this long to get up the nerve to ask. really, there is no point in attempting to hide or fib about your age, or really anything about yourself these days, as most of it is readily available through the world wide web... but, i have to say, it was really nice that she seemed genuinely shocked (or she faked shock really well) that i was that old and said "wow, you look GREAT for your age!".. yeah, lucky for me i take care of myself, moisturize,  protect my skin with sunscreen, and am fortunate to not need a cane or anything to help me around at this ripe old age... the only bummer is that now i have outed myself as being older than the gal that was known as the "old" intern in the office, even though she is a few years younger than me...

recently i was feeling sorry for myself about the fact that i still have to visit a laundromat weekly as my apartment building does not have laundry facilities (and while it may be shocking to some, it is a little cost prohibitive for an unpaid intern to own their own home in los angeles...). but, the funny thing is that eric clapton (yes THE eric clapton!) goes to the same laundromat as me. there was a period of about 3 weeks where he was going every single day and doing one load of laundry each day. wild, huh? the guy that manages the place told me he even offered to do it for him to which eric replied "what else am i going to do if i don't do this?"  funny how life works out.  he could afford to buy his own laundromat filled with people doing it for him yet chooses to go to mine just for something to do.  if you want to view footage of him at the mat you can google his name and laundry and view footage. or, you could just click on this link from when the hard hitting celebrity news folks at tmz got wind of it and decided to stalk him there....
