spring fever!

spring has sprung this week in la and all that i remember of spring fever (and all that comes with it!) during my first time in college is coming back to me.....

the weather in la is forecast to be in the 70's and 80's this week (such a relief after last week's constant downpours!)... drafting class on monday had lots of open tables so i was set.... spring break isn't for a couple of weeks for us but clearly spring fever has hit some of my classmates already!

as for interning, well, THE designer is currently vacationing out of state this week so the energy in the office is a little slower paced (as it always seems to be when THE designer is out)....also, some of the other interns are on spring break from their schools and not coming into the office...

i was sent on an errand to deliver leather to be used to reupholster furniture for the famous pop star client and to the pacific design center to pick up rug samples for a famous movie star client.  while at the pdc i was chatting with a very sweet, flirty and charming latino man that runs the showroom that i was in... he was very interested in my story and gave me a great pep talk regarding my future in design. i think he must have felt that i needed it (even through my happy pasted on smile!)...  for some reason this week i started over-thinking what i am doing and pursuing and having small doubts that i could do it.  the whole process seems a little daunting sometimes... you know, going back to school, interning, and essentially starting over!  well, he really did help to reinvigorate me and my positive attitude! i gave him a little hug before i left!

when i returned to the office there were no pressing matters so an intern friend and i decided to pop out for mani/pedis since we both have hot dates this week.  it was a fun and much needed little outing on a beautiful spring day...  now, i just need to decide where i am going to spend my spring break this year! the last time i was a freshman in college (over 20 years ago! YIKES!) it was in daytona beach, florida.... i don't think that's my style these days... hmmmm.....

i'm off to work on my drafting homework as well as pull together some design ideas for my jewelry store client as we are meeting later this week...

until next time!

cross-eyed girl

well, i apologize in advance for any horrendous misspellings or other weirdness in today's post as my eyes are still crossed from drafting class today... drafting is hard and anyone that says differently is lying... right now i am in the middle of a project that requires that i scale something to the size 1/4 inch = 1 foot and staring at the tiny inch lines at that size on my architect scale (this is basically a ruler) is making me crazy and now i am feeling like that poor woman in class that i mentioned a few posts ago... nuts! oh and by the way i am STILL not an official class member as i am waiting for someone to drop so i can add... but we're seven weeks into the semester and i'm not about to give up!

anyhow, i digress... interning was great this week... i spent a day arranging colorful fabric swatches and other materials (semi-precious stones, metals, marble, you name it!) into cool displays to be photographed for THE designer's blog... a very fun and creative job! yay! wonder if i can list "designer blog contributor" on my resume under this job experience...

for a lot of this week the weather was crappy and rainy here and being sent on intern errands wasn't so fun since we have to park blocks and blocks from the office and the streets around it are filled with massive (and they keep growing every week it rains!) water filled potholes. so, dodging those while carrying boxes of stuff and holding an umbrella so as not to get soaked is challenging to say the least!

last night i relived my youth (and my first attraction to guys in eyeliner) when a friend and i went to see duran duran in concert! it was outside, super cold and pouring down rain during parts of it but still a really good time & great way to let off steam!

happy weekend to all.... until next week!

peaks and valleys...

so, this week started off so great and then ended in a little valley....

interning yesterday was a little bittersweet... my bff intern is leaving los angeles to head back home and sadly it was my last day working with her... she really added to what has been a great experience so far and i am really going to miss her and her positive attitude and great spirit!  even when the two of us were recently asked to remove massive (at least 6 feet high!) dead tree branches from huge marble decorative urns filled with gross smelly water in the office (and almost poked our eyes out doing so!!!) we could laugh about the fact that the task was given to us interns rather than the cleaning lady that was just there a little earlier that morning...  hopefully the next intern will be half as cool. i know i have made a friend for life and i can't wait to see where both of our careers end up...

also, my sister and my neighbor both learned they were being laid off from their jobs yesterday.  they are going through what i went through just over a year ago.  that blow to the ego really sucks but i told them both (and truly believe what i told them) that they are going to end up in a much better place than where they are leaving and some of the most amazing things can happen to you when you feel like the crappiest thing just came your way...

today in drafting class i had a table for the first hour of class, until that missing student decided to show up over an hour late. who does that???? really? come to class an hour in? thankfully i was only without a table for a half hour until another student decided to leave an hour and a half early.... we had a big assignment due today so that's why attendance was higher than usual... my fingers are crossed that we will be back to people skipping next week.....

going to work on my designs for my new jewelry store client now!

until next week....

yippee!

this week is off to a really great start!

there were four no shows in drafting class on monday and i had my pick of empty desks! plus i got my grade on my first round of homework and it was good! thank god my professor is really cool about me squatting in the class until someone drops... i should bake him some cookies.

the best thing to happen this week is that it looks like i may be redesigning the interior and exterior of a local jewelry store!  a gal from my metal smithing class was kind enough to recommend me and my marketing expertise to a new owner of a store she sells to... when we met it i learned that it turns out that they need help redesigning their space as well as re-branding and marketing the store... this is the perfect blend of my entire resume of work experience! from merchandising to marketing to logo design and interior design... they have a super tight budget but i am up for the challenge! i can't believe it and am super excited for the opportunity! (insert big squeals of delight here!)  i never dreamed i would have an opportunity like this so soon!

going to sign off now so i can finish doing my happy dance....

until next time!

p.s. so my intern bff and i hit the rose bowl flea market on sunday and while i was waiting near the exit with our haul for her to bring the car around to load it all this cool stuff was piled near ours... well, it was all bought by emily henderson (star of hgtv's secrets from a stylist show... yep, i'm a fan!)... i am not gonna lie, i was a little envious of a lot of this stuff....  can't wait to see what ends up on tv! see photos below...

check your ego at the door.

so the rest of this week was great....

thursday at the internship i spent the day compiling a display of fabric swatches for THE designer's blog post, photographing home accessories for press, a bit of photoshopping to make them pretty, mixed in with a fun errand to a fancy bedding shop in beverly hills... all in all, a pretty good day!

another no show in drafting class today so i got a table again! woo hoo!  when i arrived at class this morning i was still a little down and frustrated with my extreme lack of architect handwriting skills.  that is until i was chatting with the woman at the table next to me who was gushing over how beautiful and amazing my project page looked compared to hers... i glanced over and saw that the lettering that was supposed to be 1/4 of an inch high was approx 1 inch high on hers... she's a lot older than me (thank god i'm not the oldest in this class!) and clearly needs bifocals because she can't see her page to write as small as we need to for this project.  she called our professor over to see if he would let her have "senior citizen" leeway... he told her she needed to get her eyes examined or get a magnifying glass....hilarious!   i'm going to have to sit next to her more often!

also, i have a leg up on some of the other students in class for the simple reason that i am american and was not raised with the metric system.  ya see, the other thing you have to do in drafting and interior design is know how to scale stuff down in your drawings and we have a handy ruler to help us do this.  there are a lot of international students in class and they are having a really hard time grasping feet and inches. kind of like when i travel internationally and can't seem to figure out the temperature when it is given to me in celsius (what IS that conversion, anyway??).  at least i'm not getting graded on that....

so, a friend of mine was asking me how on earth i suck it up and do this internship and all the random odd jobs i am asked to do.  i told her it is simply that i need to check my ego at the door every day when i arrive.  because, truly, if you are going to go into it with the attitude that it is beneath you, you won't gain anything useful from the experience.   if you instead look at every single menial task as a learning opportunity you will gain so much.  and once you understand that, it really is possible to do this!  don't get me wrong, i don't want to be an intern forever, but for now it's pretty cool.

until next week.....

intern road trip!

i am feeling very refreshed this week after my fabulous weekend roadtrip up the coast with my intern bff! we started the drive up on friday afternoon and stayed at a cheap (big emphasis on cheap!) motel in a cute town near hearst castle that night... an intern budget of working for free can only go so far... this place was reminiscent of hotels as a kid traveling with my family in the midwest on a budget... you know, drive up to the door of the room...  no deadbolt lock... nothing fancy... the only thing it was missing was the coin operated vibrating bed that my sisters and i used to argue about who could put the coin into...  at least it was clean and lacking bed bugs which was all we really cared about...

hearst castle was amazing. i can only imagine having the opportunity to design something so massive and so decadent with no expense spared in the design...  while it is not my personal taste, i can still appreciate the work that went into it.  i can't wait to go back for more tours and see the whole thing!  we made multiple stops for photo ops of the great coastal scenery, and treated ourselves to lunch at a gorgeous hotel on a cliff in big sur that i dream of actually staying at someday in the near future... sadly we were rained out of the flea market in san francisco on sunday but it was an awesome day regardless.  we went to a few of the high end vintage furniture stores in the city instead and when we name dropped THE designer we work for (we failed to mention that we are just interns) at one of them we were immediately taken by the owner to the locked store space across the street that is only for designers and not for the general public.  it was amazing to see the items for sale that we could only dream of owning...

monday it was back to reality in my drafting class... three people didn't show up for class so again i was lucky enough to have a table! woo hoo! AND, shortly before class began, a woman walked in and announced she was dropping the class because her car died and she could no longer get to and from class. bummer is that the kid (who is also trying to add the class) showed up for class that day too so her spot is his but my chances are even better for getting in and becoming official. yay! fingers crossed....

interning was a little slow with work today but THE designer sent me on a trip to the pacific design center to pick out some fabrics for a project so that was a fun way to spend the afternoon....

i'm starting the job of organizing a friend's garage tomorrow.   hopefully we will be able to knock it out in a day... might be wishful thinking but fingers crossed...

hipstamatic photos of our road trip below!

the breathtaking view....

dreaming of doorknobs

this week got off to a great start!  in drafting class on monday two people were no shows so i got a table! woo hoo! perhaps my dreams of some sort of a plague hitting my classmates is coming true..... i didn't have to use my big wooden board. it was awesome! i still haven't mastered that darn handwriting but am really trying...

and the other guy trying to get into class? the kid, as i am now referring to him... he was there too. but, in my humble opinion, he is not nearly as serious about getting into the class because he still hadn't bothered buying any of the materials needed for class (you know, paper, pencils, rulers, etc) and kept borrowing from those around him (me included) which was kinda annoying...  lots of drafting homework this week (that is one of the things i didn't miss about being in school)...

interning was also great yesterday. i was sent to a very cool glass tile manufacturer to pick out tile options for one of the designers. i would never have known about this place on my own.... adding it to my growing list of resources! i was also researching bathroom faucet fixtures and door knobs for one of the designers...  some of you might find doorknobs boring but i have to say that i was loving looking at all the options... this only reinforces my hunch that i am finally on the right career track!   i am already offering my services free of charge to friends and friends of friends (in general, people that are employed and have money to spend) so that i can start designing and building up my portfolio! hopefully i won't be an almost 40 year old intern forever!

oh and that not so nice gal that sits the next cubicle over? yeah, she's still not nice. but i have now moved to a spare computer right next to my favorite designer's workspace. this computer is in a super awkward spot (i have to shift my chair anytime someone needs to walk by to go to the bathroom) and not as cush as the official intern cubicle (who knew there was such a thing as a cush cubicle?) but i don't care... its even better for me to stalk this designer and be right there should she have a fun assignment to send my way.

i'm getting ready to take a trip up the coast this weekend with my intern bff.... first stop, hearst castle and then ending it with the alameda market in san francisco... i hear it is an amazing flea market and i can't wait to check out all the vintage finds waiting for me!

until next time....
