beautiful napa!

monday night i returned home from a long weekend trip to northern california with a couple of friends... we met in san francisco on friday and then headed to sonoma and napa valley for some wine tasting. it was my first visit to both areas and it was really really beautiful!

the second we arrived in sonoma we couldn't wait to explore the area! we decided to walk from our hotel to the center of town...  well, we didn't bother to ask anyone who worked at the hotel just how long that walk would take... it seemed to be such a short distance in the car ride to the hotel! looks can be deceiving... apparently our hotel was on the outer edge of town and we walked for hours, stopping to ask for directions along the way, passing through slightly sketchy looking areas of town, cute residential neighborhoods, and finally ending up on a long beautiful bike path that took us straight to the town square (all the while we were laughing about the fact that we were nuts for not checking the distance prior to our departure!)... at least we arrived just in time for dinner!

the weather was terrific and the scenery was beautiful and we tasted some really great wine!!! the only downside of the trip was that on of the gals never mentioned prior to the trip that she snores so loudly it sounds like a malfunctioning lawnmower (who knew that someone so cute and petite could emit such horrible noises?)...  the three of us shared a hotel room (intern budget!) so i had three nights in a row with very very little sleep... yeah, i bought earplugs after the first night but they didn't help one bit (i am not kidding, it was really loud) at least i had lots of wine at my disposal to ease some of the pain.... oh, and if you plan to travel to napa valley anytime soon check out this great restaurant called bottega...  it was recommended to me by a few friends... the food was amazing! what a great treat!we didn't spend nearly as much time in napa as i would have liked and i can't wait to return for another visit!

yesterday while interning i was assigned a very fun project... i was asked to choose several hundred books from various publishers catalogs in order to fill a client's bookshelves! wild, huh??? i can't imagine asking someone else to choose any books for the sole purpose of lining my book shelves, let alone that many! i love books and i love to read so it was the perfect project for me! oh, and one of my fellow interns was just hired as a full time junior designer... she worked her butt off to get hired and after nine months of interning she pulled it off...

well, i am 2 weeks into learning auto cad.... this class is from 7-10 at night.... the program is tough enough to learn and that combined with it being at a time of day where i would be a lot more comfortable chillin on my sofa than alert and in a classroom is challenging... the great thing is, i have a new buddy in class that is an architect so he already has a lot of the skills and knowledge... i call him my honorary teacher's assistant... he's very cool and has been so helpful so far, hopefully he won't tire of me counting on him....

peonies please!

i spent the weekend recovering from my family camping trip in the midwest.... it was a week filled with s'mores, hot dogs, hamburgers, playing uno, watching the kids fish and swim... nice seeing the family but a little exhausting spending the week sleeping in a bunk bed in my parents rented cabin (hopefully the big bumps on my head from knocking it on the top bunk every morning and every night will go down soon!) and being around 7 children... i don't know how people do it, having that many kids around all the time (no matter how cute they may be while behaving...). the week wore me out.  sadly, i didn't get to make it to any of my favorite vintage stores while there due to southwest airlines delaying my travel by a day and killing those plans (of course they did so after i took a taxi to lax to catch my original flight....).  i really miss my years of being 1K status on united airlines and the great customer service that came with it... someday i will have it back again....

so excited that summer has arrived and summer in la means hollywood bowl and hollywood forever cemetery screenings (two of my favorite things to do)! my gbf and i packed a fab picnic complete with our crate & barrel table and chairs (complete with tablecloth and battery operated tea lights... we like to go to the cemetery in style!) on saturday and went to a sold out screening of heathers... it was a great crowd, a lot of fun and i can't wait for more this season...

i am very excited that it is finally peony season here in la and i have been treating myself to fabulous bunches of peonies from my local trader joes.... it is my favorite flower and i just love how they brighten up my living room... i wish they lasted forever!  such a cheap and wonderful way of adding fabulous color and life to your home!

CAD class starts tomorrow night after a full day of interning... fingers crossed i will catch on quickly as i have been dreaming up ideas of all i would like to design...

until next time....

where did the weekend go?

well, the weekend is pretty much over and the majority of it involved helping friends out.... i spent 6 hours on saturday organizing a friend's home office and we still have several hours of work left to do....  she has gotten overwhelmed with paperwork over the last several months and rather than dealing with it early on and it had reached the unmanagable state and she was quickly on her way to becoming a subject on a future episode of hoarding: buried alive! anyhow, we made a great start getting through it and i can't wait to finish it off....

today i crawled out of bed super early (a little tough because i had a late night out on saturday) to hit the rose bowl flea market with my friend and her husband (they are the ones i referred to in an earlier post that have no defined style to their place and i am redoing their living room and master bedroom...).. we found some fabulous stuff for them but the highlight of my day was seeing emily henderson from hgtv's secret from a stylist show... yeah yeah, most people would be excited by seeing brad pitt but being the hgtv junkie that i am... we have similar style and seem to be on the same los angeles flea market schedule because i always seem to arrive and depart the markets around the time that she does... and i love seeing what she is leaving with as she has a great eye and has beaten me to the punch on some really great items! today i witnessed her running into antonio amidst all the booths (if you don't already know, he's another hgtv star but not nearly as fab as she is....)...

no interning for me this week... i am flying to the midwest as soon as i have my drafting final exam tomorrow (it is a presentation of my final project to my class!)... going camping with my family in cabins at a state park (yeah.... gone, for now, are my days of vacationing at conde nast traveler top rated hotels...) my parents, sisters, 6 nephews and 1 niece will be there... yikes!  it should be a fun time but truthfully i am not used to being around so many kids at one time, yelling for their auntie, and am hopeful it won't be overwhelming... i packed my deep woods off mosquito repellent and my noise canceling headphones (in case i need a break or two!) so think i'm good to go! oh, and i plan on visiting my fave old vintage stores while i'm there so i am super excited about that....

i hung a fab piece of vintage artwork (it is actually very cool framed fabric!) i bought at the last rose bowl and i have to say it is pretty perfect in my living room....

right said fred

so last night i attended a really great event that my friend's boyfriend created.  he's a cool entrepreneur (he started a great company called living homes) and has spoken at an uber exclusive yearly conference called TED (look it up if you aren't familiar, it's awesome!)... anyhow, he had the very cool idea of hosting something inspired by TED that he dubbed "FRED talks" at his very groovy, beautifully designed,  eco-friendly home every month where several people get up and speak about something they are interested in...  the topics are random and unrelated but always interesting... i attended his FRED talks a couple of months ago and thoroughly enjoyed the speakers that night and was looking forward to attending this one...  well, my friend strongly encouraged me to become one of the speakers at last night's event and to share what it is like to be an almost 40 year old intern.  i wasn't sure that people would be all that interested in what i had to say but i figured that in the spirit of challenging myself and keeping myself out of my comfort zone, why not???

well, i was so nervous when last night arrived (over 100 people had rsvp'd to attend!). i have had a career that required a lot of public speaking however i have never spoken publicly about myself and really put myself out there. when the moment finally arrived and i began to tell the 5 minute version of my story and road to becoming an almost 40 year old intern the positive energy i was receiving from the crowd gathered was amazing. they laughed at all the right spots (thank god!), and i think really got what i was saying. after i was finished many people (men & women) came up to me and said they were inspired for one reason or another...  a lot of them don't work in corporate america yet could still relate to my message of trying to start over, taking a step way back and finding happiness along the way. one woman even asked if i had considered doing a one woman show based on my blog/story (yikes! i can't imagine but it was flattering...).. and a bonus was that a cute guy i was speaking with earlier came up to me after and mentioned that he wanted to become my public speaking intern!  so, all in all a great experience and i am so glad that i did it!

how time flies...

last weekend marked my 15 year anniversary of moving to la. it is crazy how time flies! when i look back on the 24 year old gal that i was when i moved here and my dreams then and fast forward to now it is a smidge daunting... if someone had told me back then that i would be trying to find myself now i don't think i would have believed them because back then i felt like i was on the "fast track" to success... and i was... i guess now i would say i am just finding the "right" track.

so, my fab new necklace that i mentioned in my last post? well, i wore it out a few times last weekend and many friends as well as people i don't know asked where i got it and when i said i made it they immediately asked if they could buy one from me... such a great compliment! so now, i just need to figure out how i can make more in less than 12 hours each (that is how long this one took me!!) in order to make it a profitable venture... perhaps interior designer AND jewelry designer is in my future?

speaking of interior design, here's an update on some of my random design projects... the jewelry store? well, i THOUGHT we were close to locking a new logo for the sign outside weeks ago until i recently learned from the owner that we're not and he wants to see a few more...  and i wasn't kidding about the tight budget we are on there... more like non existent... and managing him is a little tricky but i have faith that it will all work out and be amazing in the end. also, i checked out a friend's home last weekend because she wants my help redesigning her master bedroom and living room... she and her husband don't really have a defined style so that is part of the challenge with this project but i am just imagining i am on an hgtv show about doing just that ... and i am pulling together ideas for another friend's beach bungalow guestrooms as well as an other's nursery...    i am looking forward to drafting class ending since that will free up some time for me to work on these projects...  thankfully my summer cad course is once a week and a late night class...

so,a good friend of mine was sent to mexico last weekend for a singles vacation compliments of her parents... i love that they are so invested in helping her find "the one" that they treated her to a vacation focusing on just that... fingers crossed they all get a great return on their investment!
