motel mondays: part 18

happy motel monday!  so, today's fab motel is on the same stretch of supulveda blvd in culver city as last week's motel.  this is the astro motel and it is pretty out of this world. i love the groovy sculptural sign!  i am happy to report that while members of my family and some friends (who shall remain nameless) don't really get my fixation with these vintage motel signs, some of my readers in the blogosphere are on board! i was so very flattered to receive a message from one asking if i would be willing to sell prints of these photos.  how cool is that???
this past weekend i challenged myself in an area i am just not comfortable... i was going to a friend's house for easter and, when invited, asked "what should i bring..."  of course what i meant by that is "what should i purchase at trader joe's and display nicely and bring?"  i am not a cook.  i never have been.  i do occasionally make magic cookie bars around christmas using the very easy recipe on the back of eagle brand condensed milk. always a hit! anyhow, other than that i don't really do it.  at least not for other people.  i save those poorly cooked meals for myself.

so, when my friend asked if i could make deviled eggs for her party, i agreed that i would but inside i was totally stressed out about the prospect.  15 years ago was the last time i attempted to hard boil eggs.  also around easter.  i was having an egg coloring party and invited friends over.  mid party someone dropped one of my hard boiled eggs...  as egg guts were spilling onto my floor, i realized that i clearly could not boil an egg.  and i never tried it again.
hipstamatic hides a bit of that paprika explosion

i'm not gonna lie... i was a little stressed about trying it again (silly, i know!) and mentioned it to a boy at the gym the next morning who, upon hearing about my deep dark secret of not knowing how to hard boil an egg, exclaimed "girl!!! you can't boil an egg???!!! that's totally why you're single!!!"  yeah, my nonna would probably agree with him there...

anyhow, i am happy to say that i did it!! yippee!! following instructions from that very same gym friend (he was very concerned about my inability and emailed them to me from the treadmill) and i got my easy deviled eggs recipe from www.deviledeggs.com... who knew such a site existed??!!??? and aside from a paprika explosion on half of them (don't ask... handling spices is not one of my talents either)  they were pretty good!  phew!!

looking forward to another fun week interning.  last week i learned how to redesign the shape of the side of a custom sofa!  cool, right??

and before i forget... sending a great big THANK YOU to everyone leaving comments on my groovy new painted rug diy

for those of you just tuning in and wanting to know more about me you can by going here... and if you didn't already know... i created a facebook page... check it out and "like" it! and follow me on twitter and you can even follow my boards on pinterest too!

until next time...

the (formerly almost) 40 year old intern

  1. It must be in our blood- when hard boiling eggs I have the Betty Crocker cook book open...the whole time. Hard boiling eggs stresses me out! (there is a silver lining to L's egg allergy- we paint paper mache eggs :) )

I enjoy Hotel Mondays- it makes me realize that we don't have any retro signs around here!
