motel mondays: part 30

Today's vintage motel is a tiny little dive located in Santa Monica on Santa Monica Blvd called the Village Motel.  Simple but still a groovy old neon sign.  I have been making lots of trips to and from Santa Monica lately working on an office project.   Can't wait to reveal how fab the vintage theater photos look in that space!

please no ma'am!!

Recently I have made it my mission to train the men and boys in this world to call me (and frankly every other gal they come in contact with)  Miss and not Ma'am.  Honestly, ma'am??!!! Really? Is that necessary? I realize it is more polite than "lady" or "hey you" but I feel about 90 every time it happens.  And I truly can't remember when the switch from people calling me miss to ma'am actually happened in my case but all of a sudden it seemed like the world was aging me up with that one little salutation.  And frankly it bums me out.   Did it happen before I turned 40 or after?? Who knows!  Thankfully the very nice boys I buy fruit from every single Sunday at my local farmer's market have it down.  And for that, I will always be loyal and purchase my pluots and peaches from them.  And the guys working at my local Pep Boys autoparts store.  Yep, I have them trained too. Now I just need to get the other 98% of the planet on board...

And for any fab Miss, how lovely is the hot pink vintage dress at the top of this post?  Spotted it at the Rose Bowl flea market a couple of weeks ago.  Sadly at $285, I had to pass.  But I did take this pic for someday.  You know, when I have my life figured out and have the funds to have someone make me one just like it!

motel mondays: part 29

It is that time of week again!  Happy Motel Monday.  I love today's vintage motel sign.  This is the Hi-way Host Motel located on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena CA.  Maybe because Hi-Way is in the name, it brings me back to my youth and all of those very long car trips in the back seat of my parent's Chevy Citation or Oldsmobile wagon with my sisters... all of us trying desperately to get through the 10-16 hour trips (depending on if we were heading to Iowa or Connecticut) without killing each other.  Oh how I look back on that time fondly.  And funny that I will no longer do road trips longer than 5 hours...

the cool factor

How fab is this groovy piece of street art?  Spotted on Melrose by my design school friend Allie.  Love it! By my fave girly street artist, Becca Midwood.  Oh to be as glam and cool as the gal in this piece with a bear serving her a martini...

Speaking of cool.  Or not cool in this case... I got a call from my sister recently... I have two sisters.  This one has a lot of kids and a very little free time so I don't speak with her so often.  Anyhow, she called me recently and said she wanted my advice.   Interesting because this was the first time she has ever called me for advice.

Anyhow, she proceeds to tell me that her oldest kid (a tween) isn't in with the popular crowd and the popular kids are not so nice to him.  And then her exact words were "well, I remember you were pretty unpopular in middle school so I was wondering if you had any advice on what I should do."  Hmmm... thanks for reminding me, sis.  Family always brings you back to earth right? Yeah, I was a dork.  Never the cool kid.  Super awkward.  Still am.  And frankly, now I will just let my dork flag fly.  Hopefully I don't look it as much on the outside... I have grown into my big feet, I no longer have big frizzy hair, or wear Holly Hobby glasses with a perpetual glob of super glue on the bridge - I was not the most coordinated gal and had a bad habit of getting hit in the face with a soccer ball back then and my dad would "fix" my glasses after every game.  Sadly, Super Glue circa 1983 did not dry clear.  It dried yellow. Cute, right?  My advice to her was not to pressure him and just be there for him and let him be who he is.  Maybe find a club or class with similar interests for him to join.  And really, it's so much better to peak later in life than early.  I should know.
